A fantastic game! I’d love to see some more deathwing

I’ve noticed a tactic that seems to rarely get used in your games but I find really critical and that is charging tanks and units simply to prevent their shooting the next turn. The single death guard near the end of the game could have charged the land raider and piled into the second one. Its unlikely that he would have died on overwatch and if you survived the combat you would have taken them both out of the game for a turn. This gambit could likely could have won the game for Death Guard.

The helbrute stratagem allows to shoot twice BUT at the CLOSEST enemy unit…

Great report as ever. Confused at one point as it was the psychic phase. Then typhus fired his hive and then he cast smite after…

With typhus tagging both land raiders on turn 5 he wouldn’t have been able to shoot with either so you would have won because of Obj Sec.

So is there not going to be a Grey Knights and Chaos Codex review?

Hey Lawrence,

Think you might have snatched that game! if Typhus goes into both Landraiders then they could not have fired the following turn because no “fly” keyword. Little Dragon couldn’t have charged you either. Yes, Landraiders are strong but they can be “silenced” just by charging them..

Great battle report. Love those Land Raiders, fantastic paint job! Belial is an absolute beast now. Has The Spider finally met his match with dice rolling luck?

Hey you constantly forgot the -1 to hit with those Deathwing Terminator powerfists!

Great game to watch. I think at the end you could easily have won their Lawrence if you had kept your PM in combat with the LR. That, plus the charge of Typhus would have meant he would have had to fall back. No fly rule means they couldn’t shoot. Would have meant only a single LR being able to shoot following turn. It’s one of the major pain points of LRs compared to other expensive tanks. The lack of fly makes them susceptible to being tied up in combat by cheap units.

A couple of rules picked up regarding the deathwing, power fists and thunder hammers are a – 1 to hit so should have been hitting on 4s unfortunately. Also the assault cannon is a heavy weapon so the turn the terminators deep struck which counts as the unit moving should have incurred the – 1 to hit so again wounding on 4s. Great game though love the deathwing as a fellow dark angels players 3 landraiders is brutal. For a cheeky 2k list should try Term int chaplain DW ancient with claws 5x dw knights 6 x dw knights Azrael… Read more »

Hey James, thanks for bringing Deathwing back to the channel mate and way to represent ?? Just some notes, your powerfists should have been hitting on 4’s not 3’s (fluff wise I think it doesn’t make sense on terminator armour but hey ?) For me I’d drop a landraider and add a Deathwing ancient armed with thunder hammer storm shield and he shadows Belial and the knights, his plus one attack halo would have helped massively with the re-rolls. I would still deep strike them in, this combo has wrecked face for me destroying knights in turn one? I’d look… Read more »

Good job guys. Good to see the Deathwing out!

You seemed to forget those -1 To Hit mods on the powerfists though!

I’m fairly certain you round down with this one. It states AT LEAST half of your army must start on the board. In this instance 4 is over half and 3 is at under half. Ina ny case, 4 does not meet the “AT LEAST half” criteria, in this case.

Little dragon, Point for point I think normal deathwing squads don’t match up vs the deathwing knights. Personally I would consider running 3 squads of knights and keeping them in the land raiders rather than deep striking, statistically you’ll only get one squad into combat first turn with a 9 inch charge. Deathwing isn’t an army you can attack with peace meal, it has to be all or nothing. For the land raiders have you considered running a 2nd HQ and using the heavy support detachment for the additional command point? I think a crusader would help massively with infantry… Read more »

Great game, those death guard are so resilient! For the terminators, that 9″ charge range is such a tricky distance. Failing it, and they just stand there soaking wounds. Succeeding and you have a very powerful charge. I feel like it’s playing against the odds without a re-roll buff like GK FttF. Looking forward to your tactica series on the GK codex Lawrence!

Brutal game 🙂 those Death Guard are gorgeous (and the Deathwing for that matter). Not sure if you were simplifying for the benefit of Little Dragon Master Spider, but you can’t end your move within 1″ of an enemy model you didn’t charge – ‘No models in the charging unit can move within 1″ of an enemy unit that was not a target of its charge’ pg182. The morale of my story is that when your Daemon Prince charged Belial, you had to declare a charge @54mins in on at least one of the Terminator units flanking him too because… Read more »

Hi Lawrence, with regards to the reserves I believe that as it states that half of your total number of units must be deployed on the battlefield then it should have been 3.5 units (in this case 4 rounded up) deployed on the battlefield for the Deathwing. If it had said you can only deploy half of your total units in reserve this would imply that you can have 4 out of 7 in reserve as like you say 7/2 = 3.5 which is rounded up to 4 but as it states it must be on the battlefield then in… Read more »

Grate battreps as usual, but hey Lawrence, it seems to me you have forgotten you have your Ghosts, no Eldar battle reports in entire 8th edition is kinda disturbing.
