I don’t have my codex at hand, but pretty sure you can’t take a relic for an army that doesn’t have a Warlord. The Eldar shouldn’t have been able to take that helm. Great batrep though. Need one more Wave Serpent and a Spiritseer and I could make that exact list. Might be an idea for my next tournament.

I love these kind of games! I really think that even with lists like this skill is a massive part of it – my favourite games are when myself and my opponent are playing really filthy lists as well as we can. I really love not holding anything back and still ending up with a close game

Dear Bone. I have read through the comments – and hope that I am not repeating someone else. But I feel like your target prioritizing is off in your first round. Never start with your Fire Warriors to try and have a lucky shot at taking out a Hemlock. They are so much better at blasting the Eldar infantery. You end up effectively wasting enough firepower to kill a lot of guardians. I would also have deployed differently. I think that you could have screened so far out that the hemlocks can’t easily shoot directly at the drones. Hide the… Read more »

I still think that T’au need to focus on the Fire Warriors. Bring them in 12 man squads. Drop 72 Fire Warriors on the table and you will have TONS of fire power. Drop the Riptides and fill out the list with Piranha squads with Fusion Blasters. These things are way more resillient than I think people are aware of. They are also super super fast and can re position and can be in squad sizes of 5. Ex. (I don’t have the T’au codex so points might be off here.) TX4 Piranhas – 410 (PL 20) – MV1 Gun… Read more »

As some others have suggested I find more luck with Tau when not bringing markerlights beyond a fireblade or two, and maybe a firesight marksman. Make a small detachment Sa’cea for the Stratagem, and don’t worry about getting to +1. Bring a ton of shield drones and/or a few more suits and you will be throwing more dice later into the game. The thing I find with shield drones is that they are so frustratingly resilient at times that it makes it hard for you opponent to figure out what they can kill, which increases the chances of them wasting… Read more »

No need to apologize for the tactica games they are the reason I stay subscribed. There are a ton of other sites out there doing high quality fluffy fun battle reports but you’re the only one doing high quality competitive battle reports as far as I know. There are those who really enjoy seeing hyper competitive lists. Would love to see you guys do some tactica reports with the winning lists from a previous GT and go over how they play and how to counter them. Would be a great help in knowing what to expect when attending a GT… Read more »

Really liked Lawrence’s breakdown at the end. It falls into what I think is the key to a lot of 40k games. It is having the ability to not just to play your own game but, more importantly, prevent your opponent from doing what they would like to do. A gun line / castle is so predictable in its execution that it allows the other player to carry out their plan without deviation. Fast movers or any other units that allow you to manipulate the board and force your opponent to shift and react to your tactics are so important.… Read more »

Can you choose different army traits (ex. craftworld traits or chapter tactics) to each sub-division of a battle-forged army or is that just an attribute of using a soup army?

Mr Bone! I couldn’t stop laughing at the “Great Maelstrom Pot” song, followed by you calling out the Spider on how off his tune was! While I know it’s a Tactica, so there’s no fun allowed, this moment is a perfect example of why I love watching you guys so much!

Hi Bone, you used savior protocols on the serpent shield from the wave serpent. Would you still be able to do it as the serpent shield isn’t a “weapon” thanks to the new FAQ.

Loving the tacticas guys! I know they are probably not as popular but please keep doing them! I am also interested by the Spider’s thinking at the end there about the Coldstars. I think I would have to agree purely based on the fact that having units that come out of your deployment zone takes a bit of pressure off your castle and gives your opponent something else to think about. Forcing those ravagers to shoot at something other than the Tau castle, especially coupled with having the chance of taking one or two of them out yourself, helps your… Read more »

Interesting battle report, thanks. I’ve only ever been savaged by Tau when I play them so it was nice to see them get hammered 😀 I do feel for the B-Bone though, he looked so dejected at the end. His luck has been bad of late but I have faith in the toga!

Watched this tactica with interest, craftworld armies are horrendously powerful at the moment and tbh B-Bone I’m glad your such a strong bloke as it was painful to watch you couldn’t do anything and the noose was tightening each turn. It’s always gutting to be destoyed comprehensively with what you believe to be a strong army. But the Tau will spring back, I’m sure ????? One strategum I’m sure you failed to read is called “For B-Bones greater good” Spend 1cp and this enables you to Kick Lawrence somewhere sensitive each time he has to roll a dice for one… Read more »

Bone and Lawrence, thanks for the batrep it was fascinating. Nasty business this Aeldari, no question.
Bone, I haven’t said this before but your Tau look sick as hell. Nice job with the painting there!
If you want my opinion (not that it’s worth much), but this may be a case of kill your darlings. Why not try Lawrence’s suggestion for swapping out the Broadsides for the Coldstars and see how it goes? Give it a try. Maybe film it too, I would love to see how things pan out.

Dear Mr. Bone, There is almost nothing in the T’au codex that could match the potency of the Eldar. Really T’au are a 3 legged stool; number of models, high shot volume + high strength shots, & markerlights. You knock out one leg of the stool and the whole thing topples over, vis-a-vie killing all the markerlights. Once the markerlights are gone then the whole army is dramatically less effective. Its really difficult to plan around that achilles heel, I try and take as many markerlights as I can with Firesight marksman, Fireblades, and even darkstrider just for that extra… Read more »

At 50:00 Lawrence states that you cannot re-roll threes, but that is a miss against BS so you had rerolls for the fire-warriors.

Not the most uplifting batrep to be building Tau models to, but nonetheless, great game! Good analysis throughout and at the end of the game, I learned a lot about how to use my budding Tau force.

Bone looked so sad at the end, I just wanted to hug him. Although I am more of a fluff gamer, it is nice to see a tactica report once in a while. There is always somethign to learn.
Especially when you have the list discussion prior to the game. Also it seems that they take longer than the game itself :D.

My thoughts are leading in a different direction for the T’au. What if, instead of dropping the Broadsides for Fusion Coldstars, what if you drop a Riptide for a fusion Ghostkeel and 81 points of something else? Potentially a throw away Kroot unit? Thoughts essentially are, the Kroot provide an additional screening layer with their vanguard move, to maybe prevent all 3 Hemlocks landing in range/where they want to, whilst you also deploy the Ghostkeel mid table, hopefully in cover or behind it. It then had great movement and decent fusion range to be a backfield threat. Playing against it,… Read more »

@benjaminbonar:disqus, I cannot disagree with the Spider, the Coldstar Commanders w/ Fusion blasters are so much better than broadsides against aggresive armies. Fusionstar is 174p with 4 shots while Railside costs 125p 2 shots and 8 SMS shots. Considering Railside has to buy VT which straight up excludes ATS and makes double SMS extremely overcosted. So even without melta effect, lets say coldstar shooting at max range of 18″ to stay alive, we have ~90% of 4 hits and ~9% of 3 hits with just one markerlight without any negatives against non flying target vs Railside’s ~34% of 2hits, ~48%… Read more »

Great report! After the SoCal Open I actually updated my list in a very similar fashion, two battalions, the first one being Tau Sept with 3 Riptides and the second being Sacea Sept with 3 Broadsides and firesight marksmen. But it lacks maneuver as highlighted in this battle report. At the SoCal Open my list included one Y-tide and a Coldstar for some maneuver but it still struggled greatly. The Tau castle can be strong against other gunlines but it does not grab objectives and earn points very fast so on top of everything else, I have found the army… Read more »

This battrep was 1 month in making but it was totally worth it. Great armies, great skill, great tournament setting and of course great banter. And this time it was one of the most awesome Ældari soup list used to its full potential by the Spider himself and I waited ENTIRE 8th edition for that to happen, needless to say I have imploded with anticipation as I simply could not watch it until now. I absolutely love competitive gaming but this was supposed to be something different something educational. That’s why I think that Lawrence should have helped Bone to… Read more »

Hey Bone have you tried skyrays? Maybe swap a riptide out for two I find I can hide most of my drones with them to help protect the riptides… I also find they are a great counter “tie up” charge unit once the missile’s are spent + more maker lights, VT ect…

I would like to see a game where bone gets first turn using this tau list, not necessarily against this elder list. From what guys have said bone should have a good first turn but luck isn’t on his side and never gets it so I think it would be nice to see how the list does going first ?

Love the hardcore tactica! Honestly I’m not sure about the ravagers in this list though. The great thing about hemlocks and wave serpents is how incredibly hard they are to kill, whereas ravagers die (somewhat) easily. I would prefer razorwings or voidravens to give that extra survivability and fit the army better.

That eldar list is nasty! I’d like to see rematch but rather than just a normal 40k tactica or bat rep. Do a review of one turn from each side. Reason for deployment style. Move this unit here. Reason for the move. What my plan is with this move. Priority targets. Same for shooting, and assault. Just this style for one turn then resume the normal 40k rep. Maybe instead of a whole game the tactica could be just be a single turn from both sides if Eldar went first or if T’au went first or if they went second.… Read more »

Let’s talk about this Eldar’s list weaknesses by acknowledging all its strengths first: fast, great mortal wound output, lots of high AP weaponry, high shot output, can’t be tied down in combat, surprisingly durable due to minuses to hit and feel no pain and invulnerable saves, accurate, and relatively cheap points wise. Okay now the weaknesses: you can’t table your opponent on turn one reliably.

Don’t leave me in suspense! What was the decision on the cold stars? Not tau player so excuse the spelling. How did it play out for you in tournament?

gross lol. i know what you saying with coldstars bone. I see the same problem with them as well the only time i can ever make them work is when i run them with ghostkeels you’ll almost always place last and just use them to screen your coldstars its hit and miss but it can work. with some annoying drone placement ghostkeels -2 to hit and we all know about that from this lol. ghostkeels also do give really good mobility and board presence that you can spread out so you don’t get as trapped. something to think about. been… Read more »

Loved the SACRED tactica shows and playing T’au myself (not really competative) I do have found my self a way to get early board control, thus complying with being usefull in more phases of the game, namely Movement besides shooting. I use this with my Vanguard Detachment consisting of an Enforcer Commander in different loads outs through my games, But settled on 3 CIBS and a GS (and 2 buddy shield drones if I drop him otherwise they can move out to another unit), I have the option to keep him back either in my lines or up in Manta… Read more »

I have played tau since 6th edition and this is in no way meaning to be disrespectful Cherub, but I don’t believe the castle is the best strategy with them. I have seen other youtubers play them this way against strong lists and they usually lose. It will work in a straight shoot out but it isn’t adaptable. You hand board control and initiative to your opponent and reduce you mobility by allowing your opponent to outmanoevre you. I think the most effective lists work when the tau are played as a mobile army. Just my thoughts…

Hang in their Bone-inator, keep kicking butt and believe in your army buuuuuuddy. I play straight Craftworld and I wouldn’t have done so well against you, though to be fair I’m kinda crud at this and I’m Iyanden, heh.

Though for 2000 pts if you guys ever wanna try a silly Iyanden list as I haven’t played in forever
3 sword and board WKnights and 3 hemlocks…which do you shoot at heh. Good luck to you both look forward to your read out mates. ?
