Thank you for the great Report. Eldar seems a quite interesting army in 8th edition.

At some point around 2:42.00 I was “How did they manage to make this game ANOTHER ENTIRE HOUR LONG?!” when the Spider had like 2 models on the board, and I get to the end of the game, and there’s still THE GEM of 45 or so minutes of these two absolute bosses speaking their minds about the state of the game. It’s probably my favorite part of the batreps. Did you ever consider doing voxcasts about the state of the game on a weekly or bi weekly basis? Talking like 20 minute long videos, or even less, just the… Read more »

That Eldar first turn movement was a bit weird. Knowing you can easely kill the Interceptors with Eldrad, you should have moved both Wraiths as close to the Dreadknight as possible. Unless him being in that hill made him unchargeable? In which case I’d frown at that rulling.

Please tell me why everyone else uses Two Psychic Powers per turn with the GM Dreadknight. Can’t find evidence 🙂

you guys are saying about how bad soul burst is for 40k, any chance you could use a list that abuses this mechanic? no body in my local area plays this type of list so i’m interested in how it actually works?

Sasha Vukelich

Personally, i’d like to just have a pint of beer and talk 40k with these guys..w/ regards to Power armor…why not a 6+ feel no pain or something equivalent?

Peter Rohlandt
Peter Rohlandt

Hey Chef. I reckon they can fix power armour and termy armour. Built in rerolls. Ie. Power Armour rerolls failed 1s. Termy reroll all failed armour saves..
What you think. Then the points be fitting

StuartFields

That was spectacular. The batrep was fun but those discussions were worth a years subscription alone. Keep those coming. Get the Chef in to talk for a day and you will have a years worth of videos lol. Nice work as always guys.

Since forum is down, would love to get a TT response on taking wraithswords or axes to LVO. List currently has axes but thinking swords better vs ork threat (which is rumoured to be major). Extra attacks/better to hit or resiliency of the axes?

Maybe the solution isn’t to punish soup but instead reward mono-faction armies. What if mono-faction armies got double CP? Or even faction specific bonuses, like Grey Knights getting to still Deepstrike on Turn 1, or Tau getting free markerlight hits to allocate at the start of every shooting phase?

I think giving powerful bonuses to being mono-faction would go a long way to making them desirable.

I like your rule Jokes @tabletoptactics:disqus !! Keep them. Great Bat rep btw, so nice to have the Chef/Spider duo

Yeah agree completely on ap in 8th it is very odd, basically i have just moved to playing more 30k and getting narrative/ fun jollies from that and just keeping 40k for club nights. Great vid guys. as for tact marines in 8th they are dead as a model range prob moving exclusively to 30k for mainstream gaming and primaris are the future for 40k which is fine as GW need to expand and attract a new player base.

mono armies are the best, i really hate soups. Another great vid lads love the discussion and rants.

Wonderful battle report, gentlemen! It was a good one to watch, even if the Hammers of Titan were comparitavly hamstrung from the start. I always enjoy a good Chef rant, and both of your insights into the game are very interesting. You have inspired me to a little rant of my own, along with a bit of brainstorming. I completely agree that the AP system is the main problem for any MEQ or TEQ units, whose higher cost was justified in previous editions because it was very binary (Ave Omnissiah!) in that marines did not care about anything that wasn’t… Read more »

My opinion on soup… everyone has one.
Fix it where it’s an issue at the tournament rules for what your allowed. Not in the rules set.
If someone wants a soup at home and shops, what do I care? I’ll take them on.
And the tourney’s that display player talent over meta exploitation lists have always been “fluff” or narrative setups.
More fun too!
The general pre-discussions before games is something I wish you would integrate further. But maybe invest in a chess clock.
Oh! Point counter point vox cast!

Do you guys play at a shop or somewhere people can come down and play with you. I live near London and it would be great to have a few games?

Guys, first – I freakin love the music y’all select or intro/outro. Real daft punk Tron type stuff. Second, a lot of talk has puttered about my FLGS on how to fix Marines. One of the things we’ve agreed on was that Marines need to be better, not cheaper. The save modification system in 8th (like in 2nd) really penalizes them. so, why not put them back at 15 or 16 points points and give them a rule like “POWER ARMOUR: Re-roll saving throws of 1 against weapons with no AP value.” That way, they could walk through the hail… Read more »

Hmmm… What people think of a GW overall rules buff to make single faction armies worthwhile? Something like a +5 CP to anyone whose entire army shares a single sub faction (IE Ultramarines, World Eaters, Far-sight enclaves, etc)? They did this sort of thing back when GW wanted people to take more Battalions and Brigades, and now no one can say no to that +5 CP. I just always find it more useful to buff and reward rather than Nerf or restrict. I’m sure this isn’t an original idea or anything, but I’m wondering what other types of positive reinforcement… Read more »

To throw in my two cents as a Grey Knights player… If I were to rewrite Grey Knights I’d flavor them as tank psyckers that synergizes around dealing a devestating smite. Keep the points the same (or a very tiny increase) but beef a few stats and add some Strats that boast their psych threat. A double range of power strat, recast of one power strat from a different unit, either combing the psyker ammos or dropping each to 1 CP, and a flavor one that does exploding melee attacks on Chaos. Adjust wording for Heed the Prognosticar and Sanctury… Read more »

100% agree with what you gentlemen discussed at the end. Fingers crossed GW saw this and will take these ideas somewhere to fix the game balance.

Good work guys – I could listen to full and frank discussions like this all day.

Do you think the vanilla GK marines are being held down in capability to pave the way for Primaris Grey Knights?

Bulwyf
Bulwyf

Good game but the discussion is the star of this one. I absolutely hate soup lists and Primaris marines. Neither have a place on my table. GW did promise 8th edition would reward you for playing mono fluffy armies and yet we all know that has turned out to be a complete lie. White Dwarf running a soup list in Jan 2019 battle report shows GW officially supports and endorses soup lists. Sad.

It’s taken me 3 dats to watch it but that was a cracker. The discussions are great – I’ve not been to a tournament myself but it makes me want to go. Now any London tournaments coming up? Hmmm…

Agreed with everything said, but please don’t make the TTT tournament 1,500. My Deathwing army will be about 20 models ?. You’d end up just seeing people spam cheap models in the end I reckon.

When you have a great bat rep but you prefer the pre and post banter! 🙂

I think Soul Burst is the weakest double-activation in the game. You lose your chapter tactics. You pay a tax-warlord that doesn’t do anything. Just imagine Dark Reapers would double shoot like Leman Russes. Not just 1 unit per battle, but all of them. No losing your craftworld trait. No losing a useful warlord trait. No losing your free relic. No way to deny-the-witch it. No CP expenditure, Etc., etc.. Likewise, logically, if soul burst was the problem, it’d be equally broken with Drukhari and Harlequins as it is with Craftworlds. Hell, without soul burst, Drukhari outperform Craftworld at most… Read more »

Fluff and game wise…shouldn’t Gray Knights automatically have veteran status compared to regular space marines?

I can’t recommend that you take them Lawerence, unless you were up for somekind a masochistic 40k challenge, lol.

Fluff wise..who would ally with Gray Knights? Can you build an effective soup list around that?

Looking forward to seeing you guys at the LVO, I’ll buy you all a beer, especially Bone if he wears that toga!

C.J. Sower
C.J. Sower

Such a fun batrep! I love the meta list vids, but honestly to echo Lawrence I think the shit tier armies end up being so much more fun to watch because you have to be really creative and use more “go for broke” tactics. See you at LVO!

Danny Aland

Last comment, if your going to a highly competitive environment, if your can soup you must soup. So if your thinking of taking grey knights, your taking imperial soup, either accept it, move on and go play Aeldari soup instead. Chefs right, soup is here to stay, in short it encourages you to buy more models, it’s great for GW. The only way it’s going away is if the community supports non-soup events. You can play grey knight flavour of imperial soup well at a high level, particularly in ITC format, but you are playing the non interactive game to… Read more »

Have to disagree with the “Eldar specialists doing finally what that were supposed to do”. Well…not really. I played Biel-Tan since 3rd edition, and nearly every aspect had a spot. 3 melee types: Scorpions, Banshees, Shining Spears (or Spears of Khaine in german…man I prefer that name a lot more). Banshees against heavy infantry, Scorpions against mass or medium and Spears against heavy and light tanks…now you just pick Spears, because Scorpions lack number of attacks and Banshees are higly “meh” (still play them). Move on to hardhitters: Fire Dragons and Dark Reaper. Dark Reaper do everything better and safer… Read more »

Do World Eaters vs Ravenwing: that’d be fun!
Also (and I’ll never stop typing this) I think your Ravenwing army not only needs the scouts, but also to swap Sammael on Corvex for Sammael in Sableclaw! It’s almost as taking a Dreadknight over a Grand Master in Dreadknight: it’s just so much worse for a few points less…

Would love to see more world eaters..! Like the idea of chef leading them to battle. Fun to see you guys mixing things up. Nice battle report really showcases some of the current issues with grey knights. I enjoyed your thoughts about tournament play as well. My local shop always does 1500 pt games and I have always loved this point level, especially post chapter approved 2018. Have to make allot of tough choices with list building and the games go quick which helps the flow over the day.

It’s interesting to see someone else roll better than the Spider for once. Holy crap Chef’s rolls were on fire. I still think half the problem with Grey Knights/Space Marines is that the humble Space Marine/Terminator profile is lacking, and the, in a way, disappointment of CA2018 to actually rectify that issue with a profile change, because making them cheaper would just make them cheaper than scouts (which, I know that Grey Knights don’t get… but still). So I don’t think the 8th ed AP system specifically is at fault, but rather the fact that there is a prevalence of… Read more »

Personally, I like the current AP-system better, or the game in general. In 7th edition, I felt like I always had to talk with my opponent beforehand what we bring, so that we can bring answers to things accordingly. And my gaming group is rather casual and not tournament level in the least. Now, we just say how many points we play, maybe what army, but then we have fun games, without the need to know each other armies beforehand. For example, last time I played with my Orks against my buddies Astra Militarum, he just put a baneblade on… Read more »

As much as I’m a Daemon player, I always thought it was super duper weird that Grey Knights, the army that was created to destroy Daemons, didn’t have access to Null Zone. Having said that; Null Zone access coupled with your auto max smites against us would make fighting GK’s a positively frightening experience. It would be like fighting Mat Ward’s 5th ed GK codex again, although I suppose there’s always the benefit that we don’t have to deal with Warp Quake anymore… (but oh wait, we can’t deep strike our entire army anymore anyway!) EDIT: Surely you’d win best… Read more »

Always love the voxcast sections of a chef video, could listen to you two talk about warhammer all day. Hell get the other lads in and make a video every now and then of you all just discussing the state of the game at time of recording. We’d lap that up!

Brendan
Brendan

Hey guys, great video! I always love to hear Chef’s take on thing. One thing that really resonated with me is that the issue is with how AP works in 8th edition. I’m someone who started playing with 8th and I’ve recently started branching into 30k. Learning the rules for how AP worked in 7th just makes that seem so much better, for marines at least.

Danny Aland
Danny Aland

If you are thinking about the list you talked about at the end, I’d drop the dreads and go with 2 gmndk with no guns and banners, you’ve got enough chaff clearance from the interceptors to make room for the dreadkjights to come in turn 2 and smash face.

FrankyMcShanky .
FrankyMcShanky .

Spider, you should take Grey Knights to the LVO.

Why? Because you’re a badass.

How do you make them work? Roll nothing but 6’s.
